ESOL Teacher FAQ's

I need an interpreter. What should I do?

There is a building secretary at each school who can help you out:

  1. Parkview: Linda Gust

  2. Prairie Ridge: Tiffany Beavers

  3. Northview: Elisa Perez

I would like feedback on my teaching practices to support ESOL students. Who can help with this?

Your instructional coaches! You can reach out to them to schedule a time to come watch. If you would like to meet with me and outline some of the practices you are currently using to see if they are beneficial, I would love that! You could also just send them to me!

I need a document or assessment translated. How can you help with this?

Use this link to take you to many tools that can help you translate class materials.

What is our policy about purchasing and using translated materials?

  1. Reference this page. If the student you are referencing does not fall in the pre-production level, then translated materials are not appropriate. These students need additional English language scaffolds, NOT translated materials.

  2. If your student is in the pre-production stage, we will evaluate the need for purchasing materials on a case-by-case basis. Please reach out to your building administrator.

    1. Before reaching out, consider: is there a way to acquire the materials that does not cost money AND that has English text with the native language text.

I am not sure how to assign grades to Newcomer students. Can you help?

Reference this sheet. It gives several explicit instructions about grading practices for newcomer students.
