December Best Practice Tip:
QSSSA Scaffolded Discussion Technique-

Q- Question. Ask the question

S- Signal. Give students a signal (thumbs up, pencils down, etc.) to show you that they are ready to answer.

S- Stem. Give students a sentence frame. For example, if they need to answer the question "What is your favorite color?" say "My favorite color is ___________".

S- Share. The student shares their response.

A- Assess. The teacher assesses the student response.

This is a great discussion scaffold that benefits ALL students, not just ESOLs. Check out this article for a deeper dive and more tips.

December Information Nugget:

Grading, Translated Resources, and FAQ's

Crazily enough, it is getting to the time of the year that we will begin assigning grades for the semester. I know that this time brings high emotions and questions for every learning, but especially our newcomer ESOL students. To try to ease this stress, the administrators at your buildings and I have decided to share this tool for assessing and grading newcomer ESOL students.

Additionally, I wanted to provide some clarification on purchasing translated materials. Your first step for this will be to look at this document. If the student you are thinking about does not fall into the 'pre-production' level, then they should NOT receive translated resources. If they do fall into the 'pre-production' level, then they should be provided with translated resources. Please look online for free resources that also have the English text.

Please reference this document for FAQ's.
