10-2 Class Structure

The typical adult learner has a 15-minute attention span in a learning environment. Now imagine, you change that adult learner to a pre-teen/teenager who is also still learning the language that the content is being presented in. As you can imagine, the 15 minutes you had, are now dwindling.
The 10 - 2 class structure says that for every 10 minutes the teacher spends on instruction, the student needs 2 minutes of processing time. This time can be spent in group work, individual reflection, or any other task that is explicitly modeled by the teacher for the purpose of processing.
It is obvious that this processing time is good for ALL students, but
let's talk about some of the positive impacts specific to students
receiving ESOL programming. This time allows students to form
comprehensible output (language production that makes sense to
them), allows for negotiation of meaning, and allows for the
students affective filter (filter of discomfort) to be lowered due to
the low risk environment.

February Information Nugget:
Exponential Growth of EL students
As many of you likely saw in our infographic last week, Ramadan is among us! At each school, there are several students celebrating Ramadan. Some are fasting, and some are not. Here are your important takeaways:
-
Ramadan lasts until the 1st of May
-
During Ramadan, many practicing Muslims fast during daylight
-
The schedule of prayer during Ramadan often has our students waking up around 2:30 to eat and begin praying, and could result in students missing parts of class to pray
-
Students might miss classes like PE that require a lot of exertion.
-
Music should not be listened to for pleasure during Ramadan (this is a belief some, not all, hold)
